Take a look at this picture. Would you want to breathe the air inside this HVAC duct? As if Delawareans don't have enough problems with allergies, adding dirty ductwork on top of their allergy problems is likely to drive their respiratory system into a sneezing - coughing frenzy.  If Pete could have seen what our duct cleaning tech saw when he opened up his ductwork he'd have been calling Lawson Home Services a very long time ago. This particular case was really bad. Every time the heating or air conditioning system kicked on this disgusting junk was blown all throughout their house in Newark, DE. Poor Pete! ACHOOOO!

And that's just the start of the problem. Dust and grime makes its way to the HVAC coil wreaking havoc with the sensitive operating pressures. In this case the air conditioner was operating so inefficiently it wasn't cooling the house at all. If let go much longer it would have resulted in complete compressor over heating and lockup, which is a very expensive repair typically amounting to thousands of dollars. And worst yet, it typically happens on the coldest or hottest day of the year when your air conditioner or heat pump is struggling the most to keep up. You don't need that.

Fortunately there's a solution: Lawson Home Services' Platinum Duct Cleaning Service. We not only clean your ductwork so that it looks like the day it was installed, we also clean the coils of both your indoor and outdoor unit, thus prolonging the life of the equipment, and allowing it to operate much more efficiently. This means increased comfort and lower utility bills. That's a win-win situation.
So don't procrastinate. Call Lawson Home services today and get on our schedule. You'll breathe a whole lot better when we get done ... literally!

A worried homeowner in Middletown, Delaware, got in touch with Lawson Home Services because they were concerned about their indoor air quality, especially regarding radon. They were anxious about the potential health risks, particularly since their house was older, dating back to 1995.

After conducting a radon gas test, we discovered elevated levels of 5.8 pCi/l, which meant action was needed according to EPA guidelines. Before moving forward with the installation, we had a thorough chat with the homeowner to make sure they understood the process and felt comfortable.

Our team of licensed installers then carefully assessed the area and set up a radon gas mitigation system using the sump pit with exterior drain tile. When everything was done, the homeowner was relieved and happy with the results. It's another success story for us, and we're glad to have made a positive difference for another family.

Job Stories From New Castle County, DE
Air Sealing & Insulation Increases Home Energy Efficiency

A home with air leaks and insufficient insulation loses energy and typically causes the heating and cooling system to work harder in order to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.

Wade H. was interested in the cost and time it would take to properly air seal and apply insulation to his home.  Energy specialist Michael Tucker from Dr. Energy Saver went out to assess Wade’s home and give him an appropriate estimate.

In one short day, the production team from Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva went out and installed two inches of closed cell spray foam insulation and well as insulating and air sealing 10” rim joists.  This work will definitely increase overall energy efficiency because the interior air will not be able to get out as easily, and heat transfer will be slowed.  Wade can now enjoy a more comfortable and healthy home for years to come.

Sealing Air Leaks in Newark, DE

In the winter, it’s very easy to tell where air is leaking into your home.  Whether it’s around doors and windows or small openings around the house, these cracks allow the conditioned air to escape and cold air to get in.  Gregory P. contacted Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva and described that he had signs of moisture on his ceilings and possible ice dams, as well as insufficient insulation that may be the cause of these problems.

Energy expert Michael Tucker went out to assess the problem and recommended an energy efficient solution.  He concluded that attic insulation and air sealing, an insulated attic door, airtight insulated boxes over can lights, and spray foam insulation should be installed. Each of these would effectively seal the home’s outer envelope and reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.

Gregory P. can now rest assured that ice damming will no long be a possibility because of the sealed air leaks and added attic insulation.  Additionally, his heating and cooling system will not have to work as hard to keep the home comfortable all year round.

Improving Home Comfort with Crawl Space Encapsulation & More

Over the years, Tom H. has replaced windows, siding, and the roof of his home.  He has also done other renovation work, but still the house is uncomfortable and drafty during the cold winter months.   Finally it was time to find a permanent solution for this undesirable situation.

Tom H. searched online and found Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva- his local energy contractor.  Michael Alicknavitch is an energy specialist who checked out Tom’s home and determined that adding SuperAttic, spray foam insulation to the basement/crawl space, the SuperKnee Wall insulation and air sealing treatment, and the CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system with SilverGlo would definitely solve his home comfort problems.

SuperAttic and SilverGlo are similar because they are both rigid foam insulation panels that fully seal and insulate the space they are in.  Each one is perfect for their application because it is not messy and will sufficiently and effectively slow the flow of heat.  Now Tom H. and his family can enjoy a comfortable, warm, and cozy home throughout the winter and not worry about drafts and heat easily escaping.

Properly Insulate Your Home Today with Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva

Proper insulation is what separates the highs and lows when it comes to a homeowner’s electric bill.  When homeowner Curtis K. found that his electric bill was through the roof he wanted a reason why: was it poor insulation or was it just how high he keeps the thermostat?  Seeking professional assistance, Curtis began looking around for an expert.  After searching for some time on line, Curtis came across Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva, and after seeing their impressive credentials he called them to come out and evaluate his home.

Shortly after contacting them, Curtis was met by Delmarva representative Michael Tucker at his Newark, MD home.  After explaining his current situation to Michael, Michael began evaluating the house for heat loss.  He eventually made his way to the attic and found that the finished attic was poorly insulated and was letting heat escape.  Michael had only one solution for Curtis’s problem and that is the installation of Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation.  Closed Cell Spray Foam is an all-in-one insulation that doubles as an air sealant.  This type of insulation is ideal for any situation, even under the most extreme insulation requirements.  Curtis agreed to the product to be installed and Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the insulation installation process.

Proper insulation can make it or break it when it comes to an energy efficient home.  Curtis’s home was once taking money out of his pocket that he didn’t realize, but thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva, Curtis’s home is now energy efficient and will continue to be for years to come!

Wilmington, DE Homeowner Insulates Home with SuperKneeWall Insulation

Wilmington, DE homeowner Tom H. found himself in a predicament when he felt constant drafts coming through his home, especially during the winter months.  After trying to replace the windows, the siding, and parts of the roof to stop the drafts, Tom decided he wanted a professional to come in and find a way to make his home more comfortable. Tom immediately went online to search for contractors in his area, and he was soon redirected to Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva whom he contacted.

Soon after being contacted, Delmarva sent out insulation specialist Michael Alicknavitch to talk with Tom and evaluate his home.  After greeting one another, Tom began to explain the problem he was facing to Michael and he showed him specific areas in the home where he felt a draft coming through.  Michael analyzed the specific areas and then asked to inspect the crawl space.  In the crawl space, Michael found that the insulation installed had deteriorated due to excess moisture that had accumulated in the crawl space over time.  After taking a look at a few other sections of the home, Michael began to explain solutions to Tom’s problem.  Michael recommended that specified areas of the home be insulated with SuperKneeWall insulation and other areas of the main floors be insulated and air sealed to prevent future drafts.  For the crawl space, Michael knew that the excess moisture had to be eliminated, so he proposed the installation of a CleanSpace encapsulation system. This system is installed along the walls and floor of the crawl space and prevents moisture from penetrating its surface and getting into the confines of the crawl space.  Finally, Michael recommended installing new insulation in the crawl space and air sealing it as well.

Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation process.  Drafts are no longer a problem in this Wilmington home, thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva. Tom is now finally comfortable in his home and can enjoy it to its fullest potential with friends and family for years to come!

Wilmington Homeowner Saves Crawl Space with CleanSpace Encapsulation Matting

Insulation trouble is a very annoying and possibly costly problem.  When Wilmington homeowner John M. and his wife noticed that one of their rooms was cold in the winter and hot in the summer, they decided to start looking around for a contractor. The couple found themselves at a local home show where they saw a vendor for Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva. John filled out a form requesting a free estimate.

Shortly after filling out the form, the couple was contacted by Delmarva who wanted to send out a representative to the couple’s home.  The couple was soon met by Delmarva representative Michael Alicknavitch to inspect their home.  John explained that not only did the specific room need improvement, but there was also possible work in the crawl space and ducts.  After inspecting the home, Michael agreed that John was right and began to explain products that would fix the couples problems.  In the crawl space, Michael noticed a build up of outside moisture, and for this he recommended the CleanSpace encapsulation system coupled with a CleanSpace drainage matting.  The CleanSpace encapsulation system is installed along the floor and walls of a crawl space and is designed to prevent outside moisture from penetrating into the confines of the crawl space.  The drainage matting is designed to drain all moisture within the crawl space to a sump pump or other installed drainage system.  Throughout the rest of the house, Michael recommended that the ducts be sealed, and the specified room be insulated with closed cell spray foam insulation.  This type of insulation is an “all in one” insulation and is ideal for any home, even with the most extreme problems.

After going through what exactly was going to be installed and how it was going to be done, Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the process.  John finds that he and his wife are no longer having insulation problems anymore.  Their home feels better than ever and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva!

Tru-Soft Installed for Long Lasting Solution in Bear, DE Attic

Energy efficiency solutions not only keep your home well insulated but are also incredibly cost effective in the long run.  When Bear, DE homeowner Robert M. found that his attic’s insulation was wearing thin, he decided he needed a long lasting solution.  Robert began asking around at work and among friends and family for a reputable contractor. Shortly after he was referred to DES Delmarva by a neighbor who said they did good work.  Robert contacted them that same day for a free estimate.

Shortly after, Robert was met at his home by energy efficiency specialist Michael Alicknavitch who immediately took to his attic. Michael evaluated the situation and agreed that Robert’s insulation was wearing thin and needed to be replaced immediately.  Upon further inspection, Michael recommended that Robert have TruSoft blown-in insulation installed in his attic.  This type of insulation is ideal for insulating attic spaces.  With the recommendation agreed upon, Michael called in Production Team One to complete the process on Robert’s behalf.

After a short one day installation process, Robert’s attic is now more energy efficient than ever.  With TruSoft blown in insulation installed in his attic he should have no more energy problems for years to come!

New Castle Attic Insulated with TruSoft Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Peggy H. of New Castle, DE discovered one day that the insulation in her home was becoming ineffective.  Knowing from prior knowledge that the source of this problem can be associated with the attic, Peggy knew  she needed professional assistance.  She was referred to Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva by a family friend and she went on their website to request a free estimate.

She was soon met by insulation specialist Michael Brittingham at her New Castle house to evaluate her attic.  What Michael noticed was that her attic insulation was almost non-existent and needed to be replaced with a more effective, energy efficient solution.   First, Michael recommended air sealing the attic as a first level of protection.  Next, instead of traditional fiberglass insulation, TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation would be installed.  Finally, an attic zipper seal would be installed on the entrance ladder to ensure an airtight seal to keep it well insulated.

With the recommendations agreed upon, Michael called in the assistance of Production Team One to complete the insulation installation process.  Now that Peggy’s attic is properly insulated, she no longer has to worry about heating bills and can sleep comfortably at night thanks to the professionals at DES Delmarva.

Garage and Attic Insulated with TruSoft Blown-In Cellulose Insulation

Brent J. is a New Castle homeowner who has a insulation problem.  Realizing that a lack of insulation leads to energy deficiencies and high costs, Brent decided he wanted professional assistance.  Brent took to Google to find a company when he came across Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva who he called that same day.

Delmarva representative Michael Alicknavitch was sent to Brent’s New Castle home to evaluate his insulation.  After analyzing parts of the home such as the attic, the garage and the basement, Michael realized that Brent’s attic and garage were poorly insulated.  Thankfully for Brent, Michael had the ideal solution.  After calling Production Team One to install the products, Michael walked Brent through the installation process.  Brent oversaw the crew install TruSoft blown-in cellulose insulation in his attic and his garage ceiling.  This dense pack insulation is an ideal and more suitable type of insulation than fiberglass due to its dense nature.  Along with this, the crew air sealed the attic and ceiling of the garage as an added layer of protection.

After a quick and easy two day installation, Brent’s home is now correctly insulated and he no longer has to worry about high costs or cold drafts, all thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva.

Reduce Odors in Wilmington, Delaware

When homes encounter high humidity inside of their basement, it usually leads to odd or musty odors seeping through the floor into your living space making your home stay very uncomfortable. Homeowners in Wilmington, Delaware were suffering from that problem.

With humidity levels inside of the basement higher than what was expected, condensation began to appear causing those odd odors. After calling out Dr. Energy Saver who diagnosed the issues they were having inside of the basement, the production got to work.

The first matter at hand involved removing the previous damp and foul smelling insulation inside of the basement. We then installed our high performance energy efficient dehumidification system inside of the basement to control the relative humidity levels inside. This prevents condensation from happening and also prevents the potential of microbial growth.

After the work was completed, the homeowners noticed the odor was no longer. Overrall, another happy and satisfied Dr. Energy Saver customer!

Fixing Leaky Duct Work in Wilmington, Delaware

When checking the duct work in homes, it is proven that all duct work leaks. Stopping these leaks typically will have a lasting impact on how well you can control your heating and cooling inside of your home. But how to stop duct leakage is an on-going issue with homeowners.

Here in Wilmington, Delaware homeowners were experiencing just those conditions. With gaps inside of the duct work, not only did this cause their HVAC system to turn on more than it should causing higher electric bills, the leaks in the duct work caused debris, air pollutants, and other air quality issues to be blown inside of the home. Also, the house leaked so bad that they could not heat or cool one side of the home! Imagine living in a home where one side is too uncomfortable to even spend time in.

Dr. Energy Saver was called to help solve the problem the homeowners were experiencing. We recommended Aeroseal which is a process that seals cracks and holes in new and existing air duct systems. Seeing the added benefits of how aerosealing your duct work could benefit you in savings off your fuel and electric bills, the homeowners agreed to the work.

We tested their duct work before sealing up the holes and leaks. The home had 722.5 CFM(Cubic Feet per Minute) of leakage. That is equivalent to a 136.5 square inch hole which is about 433.5 refrigerators full of air loss every hour! After aerosealing their duct work, we reduced the leakage down to 25.5 CFM of leakage which is equivalent to a 4.8 square inch hole. Overall, Dr. Energy sealed up 95.5% of the duct leakage improving the overall homes comfort and health!

Air sealing to reduce the costs of heating/cooling your home

We often get called because even when people THINK they are happy with their overall comfort and energy bills in their home, they have a sneaking suspicion these things can be improved.

When we talked with Yvonne she was just that type of person.  She was comfortable and she didn’t think her bills were high but on inspection we showed her all the areas in her attic that were unnecessarily leaking air conditioned air from the home.  During her subsequent Delmarva Power Energy audit she had a blower door number of 4109CFM (cubic feet per minute).  That was the number of her air loss.

After her work was done we ran another blower door and found out we improved that number by 46%!

Even when you don’t THINK there is room for improvement there often is!

What is a passive radon system?

Many newer homes are fitted with passive radon systems.  What a passive system does is it uses pressure differential (The Stack Effect) and air currents to draw radon gas out of the soil up and out of the home.  Many homeowners who have a passive system or purchase a home with a passive system may choose to make it an active system by adding a fan that will help draw the gas out more efficiently and effectively.

At Lawson Home Services, if you have a passive system, we still require a qualified representative to come out and examine the system.  We often see that passive systems have been installed incorrectly and/or that activating them isn’t beneficial to the customer.

Ultimately, if you have a passive system our representative will walk you through (1) if your system can be activated, (2) if it canNOT activated, why that is, or (3) why turning a passive system to an active system will lower your radon level.

We want you, the customer, to know what it is you paid us to do and why we are doing it.

Crawlspace System Maintenance in Wilmington, DE

A technician from Lawson Home Services recently conducted the recommended routine maintenance on the dehumidification system that was installed in the crawlspace of this Wilmington, DE home several years ago.

Our technician conducted tests on the Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier and condensate pump to ensure their proper functioning. The technician cleaned and replaced the filter, as well as inspected all drain hoses to ensure there were no clogs and that they remained properly connected. Additionally, he tested the humidity levels in the air and the moisture content of the wooden structures in the crawlspace, both of which were found to be within ideal ranges.

Everything appeared to be in good condition within the crawlspace of this home. We plan to return in a year for the next scheduled maintenance.

Energy Audit in Wilmington, DE reveals many opportunities for improvement

An energy audit of this Wilmington, DE home, built in 1954, reveals many things typical of homes built before 1970.  Typically in these homes we see a lack of insulation, both in the walls and in the attic.  Outdated and inefficient heating and air conditioning systems is also found quite often. But by far the greatest source of energy loss is one of which most homeowners are totally unaware - AIR LEAKS.  The "blower door" test indicated the combined air leaks in this home have the same effect as leaving a standard size window open 6-inches, YEAR-ROUND!  Using an infrared camera (see picture) the auditor found there was no insulation in the walls of this home.  YIKES! Imagine how much the cost of heating and cooling have been for this unfortunate homeowner.

Dr. Energy Saver recommends removing the nasty old insulation, then starting with a fresh clean attic floor so the tedious work of air sealing can be done properly. After the air sealing work is completed 17 inches of fresh, new, fire resistant TruSoft™ cellulose insulation is blown onto the attic floor. This upgrades the R-value of the insulation from R16 all the way up to R60, a four-fold improvement. That will surely bring down the cost of heating and air conditioning.

Radon Mitigation System installed in Hockessin, Delaware

Lawson Home Services recently installed a Radon Mitigation System inside this Hockessin, Delaware home.

Although dangerous levels of Radon inside a home occurs in all part of Delaware, the incidence is much higher in this region much more frequently than in others. of the state.

Radon gas seeps up out of the soil and can become concentrated inside your home where it breaks down into radioactive particles that you breathe. These particles carry a risk of causing cancer similar to that of cigarette smoking. Overall, exposure to radon gas inside is the second leading cause of lung cancers occurring in the United States. That's why it makes sense to have your home tested.

Lawson Home Services specialized in the installation of radon mitigation systems that can significantly reduce the concentration of radon gas inside your home. Call us today to see what you can do to protect yourself and those who live with you.

Radon mitigation System Installed in Middletown, DE

Lawson Home Services just completed the installation of a Radon Mitigation System inside this beautiful home, in Middletown, DE, a region within the state where levels of radon gas are known to be particularly high. However, dangerous levels of radon gas concentration have been found inside home ins all parts of the state. That's why it makes the best sense to conduct a radon test inside your home.

Radon System Service in Wilmington, DE

This smart homeowner had somehow heard about Lawson Home Service's distinguished reputation of being Delaware's leading expert on radon mitigation systems. She called us because she was concerned about the existing Radon System which had previously been installed in her home by another company.

Lawson's savvy tech, Donnie Lonski, inspected her system and discovered everything had been installed properly.  When he disassembled the  depressurization fan he found it had become clogged with bees and other debris and dirt. All that was needed was a little cleaning. He reassembled the fan and the system was back to working perfectly.

Lawson Home Services can inspect and service any radon mitigation system. Also, if you are wondering about the quality of your system, David Lawson, of Lawson Home Services,  was recently certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program as the state's only Soil Gas Mitigation Compliance Inspector. Dangerous Radon Strikes Again in Middletown Home

Lawson Home Services conducts radon measurement all around the Delmarva Peninsula. Just as to be expected from radon maps we are finding a high number of the homes we test in Middletown to have elevated levels of dangerous radon gas accumulation. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the USA and is responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths annually.

Troy Rowland from Lawson Home Services measured the radon levels inside this Middletown, DE home to be 5.1 pCi/l. If we were to compare that to the risk of cigarette smoking, it is the equivalent risk of smoking over half a pack of cigarettes per day. No wonder we so often hear of people who died of lung cancer but never smoked, and didn't live with smokers.

Elevated levels of radon exists in approximately one of every fifteen American Homes. So if you are concerned about living in a healthy environment you definitely should having your home tested for radon gas. If high levels are discovered you can have a radon mitigation system installed. It's affordable and it works! Call Lawson Home Service today to schedule a radon test.

Annual Maintenance in Wilmington, DE

It makes no sense to invest in home energy and comfort improvements then neglect to have those measures inspected and maintained annually. Lawson Home Services returned a year after completed a total insulation makeover of the attic and basement/crawlspace in this Wilmington, DE home.
During the routine maintenance the SaniDry™ dehumidification equipment was serviced, including a filter cleaning and test run of the equipment to ensure it was functioning as designed.
The humidity levels of the air inside and outside the home, as well as the moisture content of the wooden structures inside the home were tested and verified proper humidity levels were being maintained by the SaniDry™ dehumidifier. The SmartSump sump pump was inspected, cleaned, tested, and verified to be operating according to specification.

Everything was found to be "A-Okay". Dr. Energy Saver will see you again next year.

Annual Maintenance in Wilmington, DE

It makes no sense at all to spend a lot of hard-earned money to install home comfort and energy savings measures in your home and then not have them inspected, maintained, and serviced on a regular basis. That's why these smart homeowners in Wilmington, DE, schedules their annual maintenance with Lawson Home Services. They know they can count on Lawson's trusty tech, Donnie Lonski, to have a look "under the hood", clean and adjust anything that is needed. That will keep them nice and comfortable in their home over the coming years.

Donnie carefully inspected and serviced the Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier we installed in their crawlspace several years ago, changed the filter, just like we did a year ago, adjusted the settings as needed, cleaned the drain hoses, and test ran the equipment. While it was running he checked the humidity level of the air coming out of the Sedona SaniDry™ unit - 26.3% humidity as dry as the desert air for which the unit is named.

Next Donnie went on to check out the UltraSump™ pump. The unit looked great - almost no corrosion on the unit itself and very little sediment in the sump. He sealed the cover back on the unit and checked the control box. All good there.

The home has a radon mitigation system - this was checked to ensure there is no buildup of dangerous lung cancer causing radon gas in the home.

And finally an over all inspection of the CleanSpace™ crawlspace liner was done to be sure all the seams are holding and the liner remains secured to the crawlspace walls. A humidity reading was taken of the air in the crawlspace to verify that all is working as it should.

Donnie says goodbye - we shall return in a year to see if all is still going well as expected.

Annual Maintenance in Wilmington, DE

Lawson Home Services returned this year to perform the recommended annual maintenance on the SmartSump™ installed at this Wilmington, DE residence two years ago.

The unit is inspected to see if cleaning is necessary - This pump was unusually clean as was the sump itself.  All the moving parts were inspected and found to be in good working order. The pump was test run and all checked out A-okay.

Next the tech serviced the Breath Ez™ air cleaning equipment. The filter was changed out and the unit was verified to be operating properly.

By the way, we happened to notice the humidity levels inside this crawlspace was running a bit high. Keep an eye on that. If it gets any higher consider installing a SaniDry™ dehumidifier. to protect the floor structures from mold growth and wood rot.

See you next year!

Energy Audit in Newark, DE

Lawson Home Services conducted an energy audit of this Newark, DE home. The HVAC duct work was found to be quite leaky, which results in elevated energy bills. The homeowner elected to go with the recommendation to seal the ductwork with Aeroseal™, a patented process invented by a researcher at the University of California. The Aeroseal™ process is unique from other duct sealing methods as it seals the ductwork from the inside out.

The certificate below shows the ductwork leakage was reduced by 66%. This will make a difference not only in energy costs, but in ensuring air this homeowner pays to heat and cool actually makes it to the rooms where it is needed rather than leaking into spaces where it does no good.

Call Lawson Home Services today to schedule an energy audit and find out how you can be more comfortable and save energy. The audits are currently being subsidized by the Energize Delaware Program, which brings the cost to just $50 for the homeowner. Military and first responders received even greater discounts for a cost of just $25. This is a time limited program so jump on this opportunity while it lasts.

Home Insulation in Wilmington, DE

A 120 year-old brownstone townhouse is likely to require extensive work to bring it up to modern energy saving standards. These homes can be cold and drafty in the winter, hot and stuffy in the summer. And indeed this homeowner wanted the second story to be more comfortable year-round.  Dr. Energy Saver had the affordable solutions.

The first priority is always the attic. Insulation does no good if air is leaking right through it. This occurs when air escapes into the attic through all sorts of pathways. These must be sealed  before the new insulation is installed. Soffits above upstairs windows on the front of the house were open directly to the attic causing much of the heat loss. These were sealed with OSB panels and air sealed with Zyp™ expanding foam. Since there was no access into the soffits or the attic, openings had to be created. The lights in the ceiling and the soffits are also a source of air leaks. These have to be individually sealed. The attic here was a very complicated job since there was insufficient space for a crew member to actually enter the attic to perform the work as is typically done in homes of newer construction. Everything had to be done through the openings. .

One of the things causing the rooms upstairs to be difficult to heat and cool was the leaky HVAC ductwork. Conditioned air from the furnace and A/C Lawson Home Services uses the amazing patented AeroSeal™ process, where HVAC ductwork is sealed from the inside out. Once ductwork is sealed air from the heat and cooling source actually gets to the upstairs rooms where is is needed, rather than leaking out into who knows where. The air sealing worked great and reduced the air leakage by over 72%

Many other things were done in this home as you can see in the pictures below

1918 row house in Wilmington presents access challenges for Lawson Home Services dedicated crew

These old row houses, while quaint, pose significant challenges for the installation of energy efficiency measures. But Lawson Home Services' dedicated crew punch through these challenges to deliver top notch quality work, despite the difficulties.

The insulation in the attic of this 1918 Wilmington, DE, row house was seriously insufficient and the house was leaking heat like water going through a sieve. The space in which the crew had to squeeze was extremely tight. We can only imagine the heat in that attic back in August when this work was done. In some of the pictures below you may have to look closely to see the workers, squeezed into tight places in the attic.

In addition, these row houses typically had dirt crawlspaces. And, just like in the attic, the space was limited.

It took the crew five days to complete this arduous project. But we are certain the occupants will appreciate the efforts of Lawson's crew when the weather gets cold and the snowflakes are flying.

Attic Insulation in Newark, DE

Lawson Home Services was recently called to see what could be done to upgrade the insulation in this Newark, DE home. What we found in the attic was no surprise. We see it all the time; intruders. This looked like birds tried to bring a hayfield into the attic. Of course if the birds got in there, so will the squirrels, bats, mice, and anything else that might find attic insulation makes a cozy home. Unfortunately these uninvited guests do their business all over. This creates an auspicious environment for all kinds of nasty stuff to start growing. And of course there are the eventual foul odors.

This owner wants to concentrate on his attic and worry about the rest of the house later. We can see why. Lawson Home Services will do a complete attic make over here. First the old dirty, urine soaked fiberglass will be totally removed and the attic floor cleaned down to the drywall and studs. Next the air gaps in the attic will be air sealed. This prevents conditioned air from being sucked up into the attic where it does no good, a complete waste of your utility dollars. Finally the new cellulose insulation will be blown in to a depth of 17-inches, giving the attic an insulation value of R60. That will make a big difference, not only in comfort for the occupants of this house, but it will lower the energy bills.

Deadly radon occurs frequently in Middletown, DE homes

Lawson Home Services gets many calls from concerned homeowners in Middletown, DE. Reports are discovering many homes there have very high levels of radioactive radon gas, an invisible odorless gas that is responsible for about 15% of lung cancer cases in America. One in fourteen American homes have elevated levels of radon accumulating inside. Though radon is particularly high in the northern part of the Delmarva peninsula it can occur anywhere.

This homeowner received a radon report showing her home had an average radon level of 6.4 pCi/l, well above the "take action" threshold recommended by the EPA, as shown in the photograph below taken from the report from this home. She made the wise decision to have an affordable radon mitigation system installed in her home.

So why not call Lawson Home Services today to schedule an appointment to have your home tested for radon? Do it ... before its too late.

Radon testing in Wilmington, DE

The northern parts of the Delmarva peninsula and all of eastern Pennsylvania have notoriously high levels of naturally occurring radon gas seeping out of the ground. Radon isn't usually a big problem when it escapes directly into the atmosphere. But when it seeps into a home and accumulates it builds to dangerous levels, then decays into radioactive particles that bond with the dust in the air which are breathed in by the occupants. Once inside the body they can alter the DNA of nearby cells, causing them to turn into cancer cells. Studies show that about 15% of the lung cancer patients were exposed to high levels of radon gas, typically in their homes.

Nobody wants to live with this silent killer lurking in their home. That's why Alesia called Lawson Home Services to have us conduct a three day radon test of her home. The test revealed the average radon concentration inside her home to be 2.1 on the first floor. This is just slightly above the 2.0 threshold above which the EPA recommends considering taking action to reduce the levels of radon concentration inside a building.

Is your home one of the every fourteen American homes that has high levels of this deadly gas building up inside their home? FIND OUT!

Stop worrying and call Lawson Home Services to schedule a radon test for your home.

Is your home a RADON statistic? FIND OUT, before its too late!

Lucky for this Wilmington, DE homeowner, at least for now, the radon testing at her home was only 1.8 pCi/l, just below the threshold where the EPA recommends homeowners consider taking measures to reduce the level of deadly radon gas accumulating in their home. But the radon levels in a home can change over time. That's why it's important to check radon levels in your home periodically.

We need to understand a few things about radon gas. First, there is no known minimum safe level of radon concentration. Radon is an invisible, odorless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the rocks deep in the soil. The radon is released and makes its way to the surface where it normally is carried away harmlessly by the wind. But if it surfaces around the foundation of a home it can enter, and accumulate, and build up dangerous concentration levels. It's particularly harmful to anyone who spends a lot of time or has a bedroom in the basement level of the home.

The problem isn't the radon gas itself, but the particles created as the radon begins to decay. These radioactive particles attach themselves to dust particles floating in the air, which then get breathed into the lungs by humans and animals. The particles can then alter the DNA in tissue cells lining the lungs causing these cells to mutate into cancer cells. Have you ever heard of someone who got lung cancer, yet never smoked a cigarette nor ever lived with a smoker? There's a good chance this person was exposed to radon gas. Studies have shown 15% of all lung cancers are linked to exposure to radon gas. One in every fourteen American Homes has high levels of radon gas accumulating inside.

Duct cleaning in Wilmington, DE

Lawson Home Services recently performed our Platinum Duct Cleaning and AeroSeal Duct Sealing service at this Wilmington, DE home. Not only were these ducts extremely leaky, costing the homeowner thousands of dollars over the years, but they were full of dust and dirt, which was being blown all throughout the house every time the heat or air conditioning kicked on.

Lawson's crew arrived on the scene and quickly got to work. There were a lot of tight spaces in this townhouse. But that is no problem for Lawson's agile crew. They are the best and they will do the work right.

The ducts were thoroughly cleaned, as you can see from the before and after pictures. Once this task was completed the crew went to work preparing for the amazing AeroSeal™ process, engineered by an ingenious scientist at the University of California. Unlike the  traditional process of duct sealing by applying tape and mastic to the outside of the ductwork, AeroSeal™ is applied from the inside of the ductwork. It actually uses the pressure of the leaks to find and seal them. The certification shown below shows the amazing difference. You won't get those kinds of results from traditional sealing methods. AeroSeal™ is quite simply the best in the business at this time.

Also you can see the dryer duct had a hole rusted in it. That required replacing that section of tubing.

Duct Sealing in Newark, DE

This project in Newark, DE was completed recently. AeroSeal™ is THE way to go for sealing HVAC ductwork. Invented by a research scientist at the University of California, this amazing process seals ducts from the inside out, using the leaks themselves to guide the material into the holes and sealing them as it passes through. Utterly ingenious. You won't get these kinds of results the old-fashioned way using tape and mastic. Nothing is left unaddressed.

The equipment does not lie. There was a 64% reduction of the air leakage. That means 64% of the air that was being wasted to leakage is now going into the rooms where it is needed. That will make the home more comfortable, and it will lower the energy requirements and thus lower the energy bill.

Attic Insulation, Crawl Space Insulation, and Duct Sealing in Wilmington, DE

This Wilmington, DE homeowner asked us to make several things happen: she wanted several upstairs rooms, including one over an existing garage, to be made more comfortable, year-round. She also wanted to reduce allergens and dust in her home. There was quite a bit to do in this older home, built in 1958, but Dr. Energy Saver had the solutions for her home.

One of the first things the Lawson Home Services crew did was address the HVAC ductwork. Leaky ductwork causes a lot of the air in from the furnace and air conditioner to leak away into spaces where it does no good. This air never arrives at its intended destination. The best practice solution is to seal up the leaks. Some amazing technology, AeroSeal™, is available now - it seals the ductwork from the inside. The ductwork is thoroughly cleaned out before the AeroSeal™ process begins. The results Lawson Home Services is getting with AeroSeal™ is nothing short of amazing, far better that anything that can be done the old-school way with tape and mastic. They achieved a 67.4% reduction of air loss - that will make a huge impact on the effectiveness of the HVAC system.

Next came the attic work. As with the ductwork, the attic floor must be cleaned before the work of air sealing can begin. All the nasty smelly old insulation is removed. Then the crew begins to seal up all the places where air escapes into the attic from the rooms below. Once the air sealing is done the new TruSoft™ cellulose is blown to a depth of 17", bringing the attic insulation to an incredible R60 insulation value - quite a difference for this homeowner since the attic insulation value previously was just R15. A four-fold increase in the insulation value is very significant and will make quite an impact on home comfort and energy utility costs.

Finally, the crew went into the crawlspace, air sealed and added SilverGlo™ rigid foam board insulation to the foundation walls of the home.

This home owner is going to have a much cozier winter now.

Radon Mitigation in Middletown, DE

Another home in Middletown, DE, one of many we tested the past year and found to be over the EPA "Take Action" level (4.0 pCi/l). This home tested at 5.0 p/Ci/l. The EPA recommends considering taking action any time radon accumulation inside the home is above 2.0

You don't want to be living in a home with high levels of radon gas accumulating inside. You may as well live with a smoker, because your risk for developing lung cancer is greatly increased, even as a non-smoker.

This lovely new home was just constructed earlier in 2023. Lawson Home Services conducted an energy audit and found very little that could be done to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of this home. As a bonus, Lawson Home Services, an industry leader in radon mitigation, also includes a test for radon. Good thing for this homeowner, who quickly decided to have a radon depressurization system installed in their home.

Radon Levels in Newark, DE

Another home in Newark, DE was tested by Lawson Home Services and found to have worrisome levels of deadly radon gas accumulating inside. This one tested at 2.7 pCi/l.

It is important to have your home tested for radon, as one in every fourteen homes in the USA are found to have risky levels of radon, increasing the chances the occupants of those homes will develop lung cancer. Delaware, as well as Pennsylvania and Maryland, is known to have a much higher incidence of radon gas than other parts of the USA.

So you owe it to yourself and the occupants to have your home tested for radon, and if found to be above 2.0 pci/l you should consider installing an inexpensive radon depressurization system to reduce the levels of radon inside your home. Lawson Home Services can do the testing, and if yours is one of the unfortunate homes that has high levels of radon, can install and effective radon mitigation system. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

EVERY HOME SHOULD BE TESTED FOR RADON.

Radon is a matter to be taken seriously by ALL homeowners. Deadly radon gas occurs naturally in the rock formations deep underground, seeps up through the soil, and often enters a home though cracks, sumps, and other means, accumulating to dangerously high levels inside the home. Radon is present in nearly every home. Scientific studies show that one of every fourteen American homes has a concentration of radon gas that exposes the occupants to a risk for developing lung cancer the same as if each of the occupants were smoking cigarettes. This is especially bad for young children and those with compromised immune systems, like the chronically ill, or elderly individuals.

Doug, a homeowner in Newark, DE, had his home tested and discovered he needed to do something to reduce the levels of radon inside his home. Lawson Home Services installed a radon mitigation system inside his home in December 2023. Now Doug, and his family, will have peace of mind, knowing proper precautions have been taken to protect them from the risks of lung cancer due to radon gas exposure.

Annual Crawlspace Maintenance in Townsend, DE

Lawson Home Services conducted a routine annual crawlspace maintenance on this home in Townsend, DE. It is important homeowners follow up inspections and service on equipment and installed measures in the crawlspace. Two very important things that were done during this inspection was:

  1. Servicing the Sedona SaniDry, which includes cleaning the pre-filter and replacing the the pleated filter. The unit is checked to ensure proper functioning. Condensate hoses are cleaned and replaced as necessary to ensure the moisture the unit is extracting from the air gets pumped into the sump.
  2. Servicing the sump pump and components, which includes cleaning the sump liner, checking the pump and system inlet for blockages, testing the alarm and changing the battery, inspecting the pressure relief system, and testing the pump and switch for proper functioning.

Failure to perform regular annual inspection will eventually have its consequences. If either the dehumidifier or sump systems fail, the crawlspace could be flooded resulting in mold growth, and other possible damage to HVAC equipment and expensive repair bills.

Radon Testing in New Castle, DE

Fortunately for this homeowner, Lawson Home Services' gold standard radon testing showed this home to only have trace level concentration of radon in the basement of her home.

But that isn't always the case in New Castle, DE. The incidence of unacceptable indoor levels of radon concentration is higher in this part of the state than others. Regardless Lawson Home Services has been finding unusually high concentrations of radon in other locations around Delaware formerly thought not to have a problem with radon, for example, coastal Lewes. So its important for every homeowner in the state of Delaware to have their home tested for deadly radioactive radon gas. Its the second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarette smoking.

If your home is found to have high concentrations of radon you can have a radon mitigation system installed. It is a simple system that can be installed in a few hours and will give the occupants peace of mind knowing they have reduced their risk of developing lung cancer.

Radon testing in Wilmington, DE

Fortunately, the radon tests conducted by Lawson Home Services at this Wilmington, DE residence showed moderately low levels of indoor radon concentration. Still, it is not known what concentration levels are "safe" when it comes to radon gas. Radon is known to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. One in fourteen US homes has an unacceptably high level of radon concentration, that is 4.0 pCi/l (pico Curies per liter). It is at this level of concentration the EPA strongly recommends homeowners take action to reduce the concentration of radon in their homes. They suggest considering taking action any time the levels are above 2.0 pCi/l.

That's why every homeowner should have their home tested for radon gas concentration. Why risk exposure to something that can give you lung cancer if it can be safely mitigated?
Call Lawson Home Services today and schedule an inexpensive radon concentration test at your home.

This prudent homeowner in Newark, DE called Lawson Home Services to have a radon concentration test conducted at her home. Once completed she will receive a report of the test results which will enable her to decide whether or not she should have radon mitigation system installed in her home.

Not knowing if you are living with a silent and deadly radioactive killer* hanging out with you in your house is scary. Why not find out, and if high levels of this deadly radioactive gas is found in your house you can take measures to have this rascal removed from the premises. The test is inexpensive and convenient. Call Lawson Home Services today to schedule a radon measurement test for your home.

*Radon gas, invisible, odorless, and colorless, is the second leading cause of lung cancer. High levels of radon concentration inside your can expose you to a risk of lung cancer the same as if your were a daily smoker.  One in every fourteen American homes has an unacceptable level of radon concentration. Is yours one of them? Find out.

Radon Testing in Wilmington, DE

Low level concentration of deadly radon gas was detected at this Wilmington, DE residence. The levels tested to be slightly below those recommended for action by the EPA and WHO*. But not all Wilmington residents have been so fortunate. Lawson Home Services has been conducting an increasing number of radon measurements around the state of Delaware and the results are revealing extremely high levels of radon concentration inside homes in areas where radon was formerly thought not to be a problem. This is why every home in Delaware should be tested for radon gas concentration. If levels exceed those recommended for action then the homeowner can have a radon mitigation system installed in their home.

Call Lawson Home Services today to schedule your radon test. Why take a risk of exposing yourself to deadly radon gas?

It is unknown what levels of radon gas concentration are "safe", however, the EPA suggests considering taking action to reduce the levels of radon concentration in a home when they are above 2.0 pCI/l (pico curies per liter). It is known that radon gas exposure creates a risk for the development of lung cancer similar to that of smoking cigarettes. It is estimated radon gas is responsible for 15% of all cases of lung cancer in America.

Duct cleaning in Hockessin, DE

If you have an HVAC system that uses ductwork to deliver the conditioned air, its going to get dirty even if you clean your filters regularly. Fine particles of dust, pollen, dirt and other pollutants collect inside the ductwork then are blown all throughout your house every time your heat or air conditioner kicks on. This is Delaware, where everyone seems to have allergies. You don't need dirty ductwork - Cough cough cough.... ACHOOOO!

Lawson Home Services offers the highest quality Platinum Duct Cleaning service which, unlike other duct cleaning contractors, includes cleaning your indoor and outdoor coils. The coils of your HVAC are like the gills of a fish. If they get clogged up the fish can't "breathe". That's why coil cleaning is essential for efficient operation of your HVAC. Dirty coils reduce the efficiency of your HVAC equipment, drive up utility costs, and can hasten the time day you experience that dreaded breakdown and you have to replace the entire system. And of course that always happens on the hottest or coldest day of the year, resulting in days of misery, and possible frozen pipes. You don't need that.

So why not have Lawson's trusty duct cleaning technician visit your home and give your HVAC ductwork the TLC they deserve? Call us right away before our schedule gets tight.

Home Energy Audit in Wilmington, DE

Declan Hindsley is one of Lawson Home Services newest energy auditors. But you sure wouldn't know it from the quality of his work. Declan is thorough and doesn't miss a detail. He spotted so many things in this older 1952 home in Wilmington, DE - this home needs a lotta love.

The pictures below show just a few of the many things Declan found. The biggest thing, which is totally expected in older home stock, are air leaks. They are all over the place. And this home was no exception. It is about four times as leaky as it should be. But that's no problem for Lawson Home Services.

Attics are usually where we find most of the leaks. And one of the worst places is around the attic access hatch. These are typically not insulated very well either, resulting in double the trouble. Another big problem sometimes found in attic, is HVAC ductwork - the most hostile environment for ducts that carry air the homeowner pays to heat and cool. If this ductwork is poorly insulated or leaky that spells major energy loss, and higher energy bills.

The list of problems Declan found goes on and we don't have the space to show and explain it to you. But you probably have similar problems inside your home, even if its a new home. Contractors take a lot of shortcuts thinking no one will discover them. But a good energy auditor will. And every homeowner deserves to know.

The best new is that Energize Delaware subsidized most of the costs for Home Energy Audits in Delaware. The cost to the home owner ends up being just $50 ($25 for military and first responder personnel). Surely for that small price you want to know where your energy dollars are going and what can be done to stop the energy leaks. Let Lawson Home Services well-trained energy auditors visit your home and find out. You'll receive a detailed report from Energize Delaware outlining the most important and cost effective improvements. You also learn how much the improvements will cost, how long it will take for the improvements to pay for themselves, and how much money over both the short and long term you can expect to save.

Contact us, by phone or online, and we will put you on the schedule. Don't put it off, we have no idea how long this amazing program will last. Get in on the ground floor while you can.

Home Energy Audit in Newark, DE

An Energize Delaware home energy audit was conducted revealing many issues inside this home, in Newark DE, typical of homes built in the 1950s. The original attic insulation, likely 5 1/4 inch thick fiberglass batts (approximately R17), was, at some point in the past, was upgraded to 8 inches of blown cellulose (approximately R27). Nowadays attics are are typically insulated to R49-60.
Other problems and deficiencies, which are common for this vintage home were, also noted during the energy audit conducted by Lawson Home Services:

  • Uninsulated basement walls
  • Uncontrolled humidity in basement resulting in significant amount of black mold growing on wall surfaces
  • Uninsulated and unsealed rim band - results in unwanted air leaks and energy transfer
  • Uninsulated and unsealed pull-down attic access stairs - results in major unwanted air leaks and energy transfer

These are but a few of the many problems revealed during the energy audit resulting in rooms that are difficult to heat and cool during winter and summer; unhealthy indoor air quality; high utility bills.

An energy audit is a useful tool that helps homeowners develop a strategy to improve home comfort, lower energy costs, and improve indoor air quality. It is particularly important in older home stock, since these homes were built at a time when little consideration was given to make homes energy efficient. As a result, over time, problems develop, some resulting in costly repairs.
The good news is Energize Delaware subsidizes these audits so the cost to the homeowner is just $50 ($25 for first responders and military personnel). The homeowner receives a detailed report showing the most effective and cost efficient improvement that can be made to the home. Energy Audit helps Wilmington, DE homeowner plan important home comfort and energy efficiency improvements

There is a lot of older home stock in Wilmington, DE, like this charming traditional 2-story home. Unfortunately these older homes, built in the middle of the 20th century, were built with little consideration given to making them as energy efficient as possible. Then, over the years, modifications and remodeling takes place that often make even worse the problems in the home.
An Energize Delaware energy audit can reveal the energy deficiencies that result in high utility bills and discomfort. The detailed audit report will outline everything that can be done to improve the comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality of these older homes. The report will show the cost of each improvement, show the Energize Delaware rebate incentives for the homeowner, and how the improvement can be expected to impact utility costs and save the homeowner money over time.
This home had several major issues. For one, it is very "air leaky" (as shown by the blower door test shown among the pictures shown below), which results in very high energy bills. Second story overhangs in the home construction (also show among the accompanying pictures) often result in cold second story floors. And last, the radon test, which is included in Lawson Home Services energy audits, shows this house has a level of radon concentration that should be of concern to the home owner, since radon is responsible for about 15% of all lung cancer occurring in the USA.
At this time Energize Delaware is subsidizing these audits at just a fraction of the cost for homeowners. As of this time (Dec 2023) the out of pocket cost to the homeowner is just $50 ($25 for first responders and military personnel).
So why not take advantage of this amazing program while it is still in effect. Call Lawson Home Services to schedule an Energize Delaware Home Energy Audit for your home.

Challenging Energy Audit for complex 1970s home in Wilmington, DE

This is a beautiful modern style home in Wilmington, DE, with a very complex design. Any energy auditor knows, walking up to a home like this there will be many many issues with insulation and air sealing inside. The complex construction is difficult to fit the insulation into the oddly shaped spaces, and trying to upgrade the insulation in the future can be very expensive and drawn out.
Not much attention was paid to energy efficiency with homes that were built in the 1970s. Some of the building practices that were considered conventional wisdom for any builder at the time, have since show to be anything but. Ventilated crawlspaces, uninsulated basement walls, ductwork running through the hostile temperatures of the attic, cantilevered overhanging upper floor sections, are but a few of the many problems found in these homes.
The multiple attics are also difficult to air seal, which was not done in back in the 1970s. As a result the energy auditor was not surprised when he tested the "tightness" of the home with the blower door. It leaked air like a sieve.
Nor was the energy consumption graph a surprise. This home is difficult to heat in the winter. And it doesn't help when the duct work running through the attic is falling apart.
An energy audit will find all the problems and help the homeowner and home energy contractor determine which measures should take priority. A detailed audit report is given to the homeowner that shows all the problems and explains then in straightforward simple language that a fifth grader could understand.
At this time Energize Delaware is making it possible for Delaware residents to have an audit conducted at their home for just $50, ($25 for first responders or military personnel). It makes sense to have an energy audit conducted as it can help you decide how to budget for the upgrades and what to expect in savings once the measures have been installed.
So contact Lawson Home Services today and schedule an Energize Delaware Home Energy Audit for your home.

High levels of deadly radon exists in one in every fourteen American homes - Is your home one of them?
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is given off by rocks deep in the earth's crust. Normally it rises through the soil and escapes harmlessly into the atmosphere. But when radon surfaces in the soil directly beneath a home it rises into the home through cracks in the basement or crawlspace slab and gets trapped inside the home, accumulating to high concentrations creating a serious risk to the health of the occupants. The problem is that radon is colorless, odorless, so you could be breathing it right now, at home or at work, and not have any clue.
Radon gas is the cause of about 15% of all cases of lung cancer. Recent studies indicate it may even be linked to other types of cancer as well.
Lawson Home Services is conducting home radon tests in Wilmington, DE and all across the state of Delaware. The biggest surprise is that home radon testing is discovering extremely high levels of radon inside homes located in areas formerly thought not to have a problem with radon gas. You'll breathe a whole lot better knowing the level of radon in your home. And if testing discovers unacceptable high levels of radon then you can take the necessary steps to reduce it.

Dryer Vent Cleaning in Middletown, DE

  1. Clothes take longer to dry or can even fail to dry completely.
  2. Dryers can overheat and can burst into flames - burn your house to the ground.
  3. Energy bills go sky high since the dryer uses massive amounts of energy even when operating efficiently.

This homeowner in Middletown, DE was smart. She called Lawson Home Services and had her dryer vent cleaned out by one of Lawson's Dryer vent specialists.

Radon Service in Bear, Delaware

A homeowner in Bear, Delaware, contacted us to inspect her current radon mitigation system. She had researched radon safety and learned that the piping should be higher and away from windows for proper ventilation.

Lawson Home Services has a strong reputation for high-quality radon mitigation services and excellent customer satisfaction. Our experienced professionals examined the system and found it didn't meet safety and code requirements due to the piping being too close to the window and at the wrong height.

We also discovered that the fan suction was too high, which could decrease the system's effectiveness and lifespan. Given these issues, we recommended replacing the system with a new, compliant setup. We proposed relocating the piping higher and away from the window for better ventilation and choosing a fan with optimal suction.

By upgrading to a compliant system, the homeowner can achieve better safety, improve indoor air quality, and gain peace of mind. We provided support and guidance throughout the process, helping the homeowner make informed decisions about her radon mitigation needs.

Breathe Easy: Your Home's Unsung Hero - The Radon Fan

Ever heard of a silent guardian protecting your home from an invisible threat? That's exactly what a radon fan does! Imagine living your life, completely unaware of the danger lurking beneath your feet. Radon gas, a colorless, odorless gas that seeps up from the soil, can accumulate in your basement or crawlspace. According to the EPA, it's the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the US. Yikes!

But fear not! Here's where your silent guardian comes in. As part of a radon mitigation system, a radon fan acts like a tireless bodyguard, constantly working behind the scenes. It connects to a network of pipes that snake under your foundation, silently sucking up radon gas before it can enter your living space. Think of it as a tiny vacuum cleaner, specifically designed for this sneaky gas.

Keeping an Eye on Your Silent Guardian: The Manometer

Just like any hero needs a trusty sidekick, the radon fan relies on a partner called the manometer. This U-shaped device, filled with water, acts like a little gauge. It shows whether your silent guardian is pulling its weight. A healthy water movement in the manometer indicates the fan is creating enough suction to keep radon at bay.

Signs Your Silent Guardian Needs Help

Even the most dedicated heroes can face challenges. Here's how to know if your radon fan might need a helping hand:

  • The Silence is Deafening: Normally, your radon fan produces a low hum. If you suddenly find yourself living in a world of blissful (yet suspicious) quiet, it could be a sign the fan has stopped working.
  • Manometer Mishap: Remember the water gauge (manometer)? If the water level sits stagnant, with no movement, it might indicate the fan isn't creating enough suction to remove the radon.
  • Regular Checkups are Key: Even without any immediate signs, it's important to retest your home's radon levels every 2-4 years. Think of it as a checkup for your silent guardian!

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late: Call in the Radon Rescue Team!

If you suspect your silent guardian might be struggling, don't wait. Radon exposure is a serious health concern, and a compromised mitigation system can leave your home vulnerable. At Lawson Home Services, we're your friendly neighborhood radon rescue team! We offer a complete package to keep your home safe and healthy:

  • Radon Testing: We'll assess your home's radon levels with a quick and easy test.
  • Radon Mitigation System Installation: Our experts will install a top-notch radon mitigation system, complete with a reliable radon fan – your new silent guardian!
  • Radon System Maintenance: We'll keep your silent guardian in tip-top shape with regular maintenance checkups.
  • Expert Advice and Support: We're here for you every step of the way, answering your questions and providing clear explanations.

Just like the homeowner in Wilmington, Delaware, who contacted Lawson Home Services after noticing signs of a faulty fan, you too can have peace of mind. Our team is known for its quick response, clear communication, and efficient service. We take pride in making the process stress-free, so you can focus on what truly matters – breathing easy in your safe and healthy home.

Don't let radon become a silent threat. Contact Lawson Home Services today and let us introduce you to your home's silent guardian!
