BPI Certification – defined

Owner David Lawson is one of our BPI certified inspectors. The Building Performance Institute (BPI) sets the standards for a variety of home improvement areas. In this situation, the word standard refers to documented practices. Being BPI certified means you are familiar with their commonly adopted standards used to help reduce possible confusion about a product or service.  Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva's Owner David Lawson, is a trusted BPI Certified Professional that adheres to the following BPI Standards and encourages his staff to do the same.

BPI sets six types of standards.

  • Materials: This standard explains how materials are tested to meet their performance goals. It includes the necessary labeling and documentation that may need to be provided.
  • Material Test Method: This is the report available after a material is tested in a lab. It also explains how the lab test should be conducted. It does not look at how the material should score on the test.
  • Installation: This is used to define how products should be installed in a home. For example, each type of blown insulation has its own installation standard. The standard defines:
    • The settings of the machine.
    • The length of the hose.
    • The nozzle size needed for proper installation.
  • Application: This is used to define the function of a product in an area of the home. For example, the application standard for attic insulation includes all work needed before installing the insulation.
  • Standard Practice: This standard is similar to the material test method standard. It provides the requirements for completing a procedure within the home. For example, a duct testing standard practice describes how to setup and complete the test. It will not say how the home should score on the test.
  • Standard Specification: This standard looks at how a product or material performs, should be rated, and how this is measured. It uses other standards to confirm the standard specification standard is met.

Who benefits from BPI standards?

The BPI standards aim to make sure everyone benefits from a common understanding of how buildings should perform. What makes up everyone: purchasers, service providers like us, and manufacturers of products used in homes. All six of the BPI standards mentioned work together to achieve this goal.
